Student Drivers
Driving is a major responsibility!
As North Polk students become driving-aged, this section of the website will prove to be a helpful resource for signing up for drivers education, registering for the drivers test, and obtaining a school permit.
Driver Test: Skip The Trip
We've teamed up with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) for Skip the Trip at North Polk. This program lets North Polk students take the driver knowledge test needed for a driver's instruction permit right here at our school, saving you trips to DOT centers if your student doesn't pass on the first try.
To qualify for this test at North Polk, students must:
- Be a current North Polk student.
- Be aged 14 or older.
- Not have an Iowa instruction permit.
Parents/guardians must fill out the "Skip the Trip Driver Test at NP" Google form to schedule a test date.
Testing is available during the school year from 7:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on late start Mondays and from 7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. For summer testing times, contact amanda.hupp@northpolk.org.
Once complete, students will be notified of their test results. If they don't pass, they can retake the test 48 hours later, allowing time to study. The test can be taken once daily at a DOT testing center.
After passing, students must visit a driver's license service center with a parent or legal guardian to get an instruction permit. They'll receive a test receipt email to bring along with required identity documentation.
For test preparation, students can study the Iowa Driver's Manual and take practice tests online.
